Chelsea have sacked Liam Rosenior after three and a half months in charge, following five straight defeats without scoring, their worst run in 14 years.

Rosenior had signed a six and a half year deal, but the club announced the decision on Wednesday. The club said in a statement that recent results and performances had not met expectations, and wished him well while stressing there was still much to play for this season.

The skid included defeats to Newcastle (0-1), Everton (3-0), Manchester City (0-3), Manchester United (0-1) and, most recently on Tuesday, Brighton (3-0).

The slump has complicated their bid for the next Champions League, a minimum target set when Enzo Maresca was dismissed on 1 January over disagreements. Chelsea sit seventh, seven points off fifth.

Calum McFarlane will take charge as interim head coach until the end of the season. He previously led the team between Maresca’s exit and Rosenior’s appointment.

Rosenior opened with four wins from his first four Premier League matches, but has only one victory in the last seven. Last weekend, hundreds of supporters gathered near Stamford Bridge to protest against the ownership and the club’s instability.

On Sunday Chelsea face Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final, their only remaining chance of a trophy.
