Chelsea have sanctioned Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández for comments about living in Spain and Madrid, widely interpreted as him touting himself to Real Madrid.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the club’s French coach, Liam Rosenior, said Fernández will not play against Port Vale in the FA Cup on Saturday or against Manchester City next Sunday. He said it was a club decision after speaking with the player an hour earlier.

Rosenior said he respects Fernández as a person and player and that the midfielder is frustrated because he wants the team to succeed. He added the decision was shared across staff, board and squad, the door remains open, but a line was crossed in terms of culture and he would not speak for the player’s future.

The remarks came as Real Madrid look to strengthen their midfield for next season, with Fernández among those linked.

The report adds that Florentino Pérez prefers Rodrigo Hernández of Manchester City, whose contract runs until June 2027. It says Pérez views Rodri as his sole target and has been working for months on a possible deal.
