Chelsea are likely to sign a Strasbourg player this summer, and that will mean more money for Brighton.

All the chatter in the international break about potential summer arrivals at Chelsea seemed to focus on Valentin Barco, currently starring for our sister club Strasbourg. He’s had a great 18 months there, and looks to be ready for a move up the food chain.

It will be very interesting to see how much Chelsea pay – it needs to be at a fair market rate to avoid scrutiny from UEFA, and to keep Strasbourg fans happy (or at least to stop them getting even more annoyed).

As Kieran Gill pointed out in his piece for the Daily Mail today, this would lead to another pay-off to Brighton, who may as well be an affiliate at this point.

They sold Barco to the Ligue 1 side with a 10% sell on fee. Chelsea would likely be paying something north of £40m, so it won’t be insignificant.

Still, at this point we’ve handed over hundreds of millions for players and staff members. What’s a few million more, between friends?
