Chelsea should consider extremely ambitious bid for Everton star as inverted left back

Left back is a position of need for Chelsea this summer, as they noted on The Athletic’s Sensible Transfers video this morning.

They made one outlandish suggestion for who the Blues could sign to fill that gap and complement Marc Cucurella’s strong and weak points.

Premium option is Everton’s rising star

“As a result [of Cucurella’s weaknesses] Chelsea could look to a player who excels in more of the defensive side of the left back role” they explained.

“Which is presumably why they’ve been looking at Jarrad Branthwaite. Not only could Branthwaite be used as a more defensive option at left back who could shift inside when the right back inverted, but he could also offer cover for Levi Colwill as well. However despite the fact that Branthwaite would be able to cover the outside centre back part of the role, he wouldn’t be able to offer some of the things that Maresca might want further up the pitch.

You can see their thoughts on who Chelsea might consider in the clip embedded here:

Their suggestion for players who could do both parts of the game: Jorrel Hato of Ajax, and has been linked to Chelsea quite a lot in the last couple of seasons. They also suggest Piero Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen, as another premium option. Sadly you just don’t get versatile, top level, young players for cheap.

Ghent full back Archie Brown a cheaper option for Blues

Archie Brown’s stats as Chelsea look for affordable left back.

Archie Brown of Ghent, who we’ve also been linked to in the past, is a cheaper option they suggest. Coming from Belgium and with just one year left on his deal, he’d be a bargain.

However if we were looking to develop a player in that position, we’d rather see academy kid Ishe Samuels Smith used instead.
