Chelsea Transfer News: Alonso’s Squad Faces Major Summer Reset

Credit to The Athletic for the original information.

Chelsea’s summer already feels less like a transfer window and more like an exercise in architecture. Xabi Alonso has inherited talent, depth and possibility, but also the familiar problem at Stamford Bridge, too many moving parts.

The club are closing in on 21-year-old Atalanta defender Marco Palestra, while an £8m bid for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has been rejected. Sunderland do not want to sell, though Chelsea have not walked away.

Chelsea’s Squad Must Be Trimmed

Alonso’s first priority should be clarity. Chelsea need fewer players, not merely more options.

Enzo Fernandez and Malo Gusto remain two of the most significant unresolved cases. Fernandez is admired by Real Madrid, while Gusto has interest from clubs including Manchester City. Chelsea value them at £120m and £75m respectively.

If either player is to leave, Chelsea need decisions early. Pre-season should be about building rhythm, not managing uncertainty.

Xhaka Interest Shows Alonso’s Influence

The Xhaka link is fascinating because it speaks directly to Alonso’s preferences. The 33-year-old played under him at Bayer Leverkusen, understands his demands and would bring immediate authority.

Chelsea’s £8m bid was rejected, but the idea has logic. Xhaka would not be signed for the future, he would be signed for control, leadership and tactical memory.

Defensive Plans Gather Pace

Chelsea are determined to sign at least one centre-back. Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix is among their main targets, while Como’s Jacobo Ramon is also admired.

Trevoh Chalobah could leave, with Chelsea rejecting offers from Como but remaining open to a £35m package. Benoit Badiashile is also among those likely to depart.

Pep Chavarria of Rayo Vallecano is another live target, with talks opened and confidence growing over a move.

Attacking Decisions Still Loom

Morgan Rogers remains of interest, although Aston Villa would demand a large fee. Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are also in the mix.

Chelsea must also decide which striker leaves. Joao Pedro is not expected to be among the exits, while Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha face uncertain futures.

Marc Guiu has loan and permanent interest, Tyrique George could join Everton, and Filip Jorgensen is expected to be allowed to leave.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Chelsea supporter’s perspective, this report feels both exciting and slightly exhausting.

There is ambition here, clearly. Palestra, Lacroix, Rogers and Chavarria all point towards a club still hunting for improvement. The issue is whether Chelsea can finally stop collecting players and start building a team.

The Xhaka move is the one that will divide opinion. Some fans will look at his age and wonder why Chelsea are pursuing a 33-year-old. Others will see exactly why Alonso might want him. This squad has enough promise. It needs calm, standards and players who understand how to win difficult football matches.

The Fernandez and Gusto situations matter most. Selling either would be huge, but Chelsea’s valuations suggest they will not be pushed around. If Real Madrid or Manchester City want them, they must pay properly.

For once, the most important business may not be who Chelsea sign, but who they move on. Alonso needs a squad he can coach, not a queue of talented players waiting for minutes.

Chelsea have spent years buying potential. This summer needs to be about purpose.
