Remember a couple of years ago when Chelsea’s injury situation was so bad that the club had to do weekly “injury reports” like an NFL team, to stop the entire press conference just being an update on the 8 or 9 players who were out of action at that point?

Fortunately things aren’t that bad right now, but the club have just given an individual update on Dario Essugo. “Chelsea Football Club has released the following update regarding Dario Essugo,” they reported on their official website.

“Midfielder Dario Essugo has undergone successful surgery today on his thigh. The 20-year-old sustained the injury whilst on international duty for Portugal’s Under-21s. Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action and Dario will now begin his recovery at Cobham, supported by the club’s medical department.”

Essugo joins Liam Delap, who was ruled out until November at least in a report today, Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile on the growing injury list at Chelsea.

With the Champions League about to kick in, the timing couldn’t be worse. We’re losing players just when we’re starting to need them.

Essugo then put out the following update on his Instagram, featuring the compulsory thumbs up from hospital bed accompaniment:

“Unfortunately, during this international break with the National Team I felt something in my thigh that will keep me out for a while,” he wrote.

“It’s frustrating to start the season like this, especially after already facing another setback not long ago. But I truly believe everything happens for a reason. God has a bigger plan. I’ll be back stronger.”

We certainly hope so. Good luck, Dario.
