Chelsea survived a scare as they twice came from behind to beat Wrexham 4-2 after extra time and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The match started slowly, with the Blues dominating possession but struggling to break down a disciplined Wrexham defence.

Despite limited attacking play, the hosts opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Sam Smith latched onto a long ball and finished past the goalkeeper.

The Premier League side equalised before half-time in fortunate fashion. Alejandro Garnacho’s effort was cleared off the line, but the ball rebounded off goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and into the net.

The Red Dragons regained the lead late in the second half when Chelsea failed to deal with a corner and Callum Doyle flicked the ball into the net.

The advantage lasted only a few minutes as Josh Acheampong responded quickly, smashing a powerful effort into the roof of the net.

The turning point came when George Dobson was sent off following a VAR review for a challenge on Garnacho.

Liam Rosenior's side took control in extra time and finally went ahead when Garnacho volleyed home at the far post from Dario Essugo’s cross.

The Welsh side thought they had forced another twist when substitute Lewis Brunt turned the ball in during the 114th minute, but VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for offside.

Substitute João Pedro sealed the win late on with a composed finish to ensure Chelsea progressed.
