Chelsea will continue next season with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen as their goalkeeping duo, despite asking about AC Milan star Mike Maignan this summer.
According to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol, the Blues will retain Sanchez as their number one between the sticks.
Despite making five errors that led to a goal this season in the Premier League, Sanchez produced a brilliant display as Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain to clinch the FIFA Club World Cup.
To be fair to him, his shot-stopping was also phenomenal in the Premier League for most of the season.
However, the decision to persist with Sanchez could come back to haunt them next season.
Even in his so-called best display for the club against PSG in the Club World Cup final, he was guilty of a schoolboy error that could have gifted the French side a lifeline.
Chelsea inexplicably sold Djordje Petrovic and are loaning out one of Europe’s most promising young talents, Mike Penders, all to protect Sanchez.
He made some key saves this season, but five errors leading to goals is a damning statistic. This number does not even account for the giveaways that resulted in turnovers.
Even in the Club World Cup tournament, his distribution was sloppy, and his decision-making was suspect.
Chelsea could end up sabotaging their entire season by treating Sanchez like he is untouchable.
The Blues need an assured, consistent presence between the sticks, not a liability protected by blind faith and poor judgment.
