Chelsea take on Barcelona in the Champions League this week and they may have a difficult task ahead of them, with a poor head to head record against the Spanish champions.
The Blues have won just one game against Barca in their history but they will be hoping to turn the tables on Thursday night.
In their seven head to head meetings, Chelsea have beaten Barcelona just once.
That one win came two years ago in the Champions League as the Blues shocked their European rivals in Spain with a 1-0 win courtesy of an Erin Cuthbert goal.
Chelsea’s joy was short-lived, as Barcelona travelled to England a week later and won 2-0 to advance to the final for a second consecutive year.
In last year’s Champions League yet again these teams met in the semi final but this time Barca dominated.
The Catalan giants won both home and away legs 4-1, winning the semi final 8-2 on aggregate on the way to becoming three-time reigning champions of Europe.
Of course Thursday’s game is also a rematch of the 2021 Champions League final.
Barca dominated from start to finish in that game and a comfortable 4-0 win denied Chelsea their first ever European title.
Ever since they first met in Europe, Barcelona have been a thorn in Chelsea’s side.
This season is the first time the teams will be meeting each other in the group stage though and the Blues will be hopeful of securing an important three points in the Champions League.
Chelsea dropped points against FC Twente in their first game of the campaign but won convincingly in both of their next two matchdays.
Barcelona on the other hand are still perfect in Europe – winning by a combined score of 14-1 in their three games.
Whatever happens on Thursday night fans are sure to be treated to a thriller and with Chelsea’s home advantage they will be confident on finally turning the tables on their bitter rivals.
