Big win for Blues as Graham Potter loses on Stamford Bridge return

OneFootball Videos

Chelsea struggled back from a goal down to beat Graham Potter's West Ham United 2-1 on Monday, with a second-half strike from substitute Pedro Neto and an own goal by Aaron Wan-Bissaka lifting them to fourth place in the Premier League.

Jarrod Bowen, in his first game back after a month out with a foot fracture, put the Hammers ahead when he pounced on a back pass by defender Levi Colwill three minutes before halftime and fired a left-foot shot past Filip Jorgensen in Chelsea's goal.

The hosts looked brighter after early substitutions and Neto snatched their 64th-minute equaliser after latching onto a ricocheted shot from teammate Enzo Fernandez. After a lengthy VAR check for offside, the goal was given.

Cole Palmer created Chelsea's second 10 minutes later, crossing the ball in front of goal where Aaron Wan-Bissaka deflected it into his own net, much to the despair of former Chelsea manager Potter on his return to Stamford Bridge.

The result lifted Chelsea above Newcastle United and Manchester City into fourth spot, four points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest. West Ham are 15th on 27.

Potter happy with 'significant' West Ham boost on deadline day

Graham Potter hailed West Ham’s deadline-day business after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Hammers signed Evan Ferguson on a straight loan from Brighton until the end of the season and reached a mutual agreement with Nottingham Forest to terminate James Ward-Prowse’s loan there and bring him back to the London Stadium.

West Ham had been in the hunt for the striker during the winter window after the long-term injuries sustained by Michail Antonio, Niclas Fullkrug and Jarrod Bowen. The England forward did return following his foot injury in Monday night’s 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, though, and had put the Hammers into the lead.

Maresca addresses Chelsea injury latest after Jackson and Guiu scares

Enzo Maresca has eased injury fears over Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson after the pair went down during Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over West Ham.

Jackson twisted awkwardly when slipping during the first-half of the London derby and appeared to clutch his hamstring. He was able to play on after treatment, but was replaced by Guiu early in the second-half.

In the end, it came an hour earlier than billed, with the full-time whistle of a hard-won, slightly fortuitous 2-1 victory over West Ham that sends his Chelsea side back into the top-four.

Potter denied fairytale return but West Ham offer signs of progress

So not the fairytale result Graham Potter had wanted on his return to Stamford Bridge, but the West Ham boss will have been encouraged by his team’s level of performance and no lack of fight.

A 2-1 defeat in the end for the Hammers — their third in his first five games at the helm — yet Potter always knew the changes he was being hired to make were not quick tinkers here and there.

Mohammed Kudus swivelled on the ball, struck on goal, but was denied by a super block in the final throes of stoppage time. West Ham knew that was their final chance. On another night, they would have got something out of this London derby. They undoubtedly played well enough.
