Chelsea make the trip to Southampton on Wednesday night as the Blues look to continue their good form.
Enzo Maresca has insisted his inexperienced side are not title challengers, despite boasting an identical record to second-placed Arsenal heading into the midweek fixtures. Chelsea produced one of their best performances of the season at the weekend after thrashing top-four rivals Aston Villa 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Cole Palmer was on target again to become the second-fastest Chelsea player to reach 30 goals in the Premier League, behind only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He now has 47 goals and assists since his Chelsea debut – more than any other player in the Premier League.
Their opponents are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, having taken just five points from their opening 13 fixtures. However, the Saints have proven awkward opposition in recent fixtures with Liverpool and Brighton, earning a point against the latter on the road.
Chelsea have been dealt a blow with Wesley Fofana set to be ruled out until the New Year with a hamstring injury.
The Frenchman has had a torrid time with injuries in recent campaigns and his latest setback is a disappointment after a strong start to the campaign. Reece James is also out with a hamstring issue, though Maresca has an almost full squad to choose from, those issues aside. Noni Madueke could return to the starting side after being left out against Aston Villa.
Chelsea predicted XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Badiashile, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Neto, Palmer, Madueke; Jackson.
Southampton host Chelsea in the Premier League on Wednesday 4th December 2024. Kick-off at St Mary’s is 19:30 GMT.
