Chelsea go into this week’s two huge games with some serious concerns.

The attack just isn’t clicking, and the Blues have relied on set pieces and wondergoals in the main in their 4 games so far this season. But the results have still been decent, thanks to the solid defence.

Much doubted defender continues to impress

WhoScored’s Tweet about Trevoh Chalobah.

At the heart of that defence has been the very solid partnership between Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah. If everyone was fit, neither of them would be starting. But they’ve done really well to form a partnership while Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana have been out.

Chalobah has been the best of the bunch – stats site WhoScored today noted that the centre back has been the highest rated central defender in the whole Premier League this season, with an impressive 7.65 average rating.

That’s higher than even the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and William Saliba.

Maresca has big questions to answer with top option returning

Amazingly, Chalobah has not even the highest rated player in Chelsea’s squad – but that just tells you how good Moises Caicedo (who has averaged an even higher rating of 7.7) has been.

Caicedo’s super effective sweeping up from midfield is what helps Chalobah and Tosin perform, as does the improved performances of Robert Sanchez behind them.

With Fofana now approaching fitness – he played his first 45 minutes since the spring on Saturday – it will be very interesting to see what manager Enzo Maresca does next. On the evidence of that game, Fofana is still some way off full fitness.

But when he’s back, surely it will be Tosin rather than Chalobah who drops out.

The defender continues to prove himself time and again, a home grown star and a leader, a player who fans can really appreciate who gives it his all.
