The 58-year-old made a remarkable return to Bramall Lane in September, less than three months after he was dismissed from his role as the Blades’ boss.

Ruben Selles' short-lived tenure in charge of the Steel City side saw the club suffer a dreadful start to the campaign, as they lost their first five matches of a Football League campaign for just the second time in their history.

Naturally, this has left Sheffield United rooted to the bottom of the Championship table and not even Wilder’s reintroduction has been able to turn their fortunes around quickly.

A much-needed first win of the season away at Oxford United was a small source of optimism, but defeats against Charlton Athletic and Southampton show that there is still much that needs to be improved within the Blades’ squad.

Wilder will be keen to assert his values in the dressing room once again and clearly intends on doing things his own way, after recently turning down a suggestion from the board about what to do during the international break.

With the October international break rapidly approaching, clubs up and down the Championship will have different plans about how best to spend that brief break in league action.

Some sides may allow their players to take a short break, conscious of the overwhelming festive period that edges ever closer, whilst others may use the time to get some extra training done, especially if recent results haven’t been favourable.

When speaking to SUTV, Wilder revealed that the Sheffield United board suggested a trip away during the upcoming international break, but this request was firmly denied by the manager.

"The board and Steve Bettis have been outstanding because they've said, 'What do you want to do with them during the international break? Shall we go to a camp in Spain and take them away and foster that team spirit?

“I went, 'No, the spirit is there, we need to work hard.' We need to work through this period physically, tactically; it's a real big opportunity for us. I think we've got Chieo, Sydie, Tyler, Ryan One and Nils away.

“5 boys, so we've got a big group to work with. Getting Danny Ings, Ben Mee, the boys that come in late, the boys that need a nudge up, from a tactical point of view and a physical point of view, we're working."

Chris Wilder will hope to reset during the October international break

When Wilder returned to the Sheffield United job, he did so without much time to spend with the group and was thrown straight into action.

Clearly, trauma from last season’s cruel play-off defeat and this term’s dreadful start is still affecting players within the Blades’ camp and Wilder hasn’t had any time to address this, with important matches coming thick and fast.

During the international break, the 58-year-old will finally afford himself the opportunity to sit down with his squad and assess everything that has happened, before choosing how they’re going to move on from the situation effectively.

Wilder proved last season that he still has the managerial capabilities to guide Sheffield United to the brink of promotion. If he can breathe confidence back into his group and get them playing with freedom once more, there is no reason why they can’t shoot back up the table after the international break.
