Christian Eriksen is expected to be discharged after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly with Ukraine in Odense on Sunday, a match abandoned soon after.

The 34-year-old lost consciousness on 65 minutes before regaining awareness and walking from the pitch unaided.

It recalled June 2021, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest against Finland at Euro 2020 in Copenhagen. He was resuscitated, then fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator to monitor his heart and deliver shocks if required.

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen said on Monday Eriksen was doing well with his family and likely to be discharged soon. He said the ICD worked as intended.

Eriksen revived his career with Brentford in 2022, then spent three years at Manchester United before joining Wolfsburg.

He had previously said he did not see a risk playing with an ICD and felt protected by it. Sunday’s events tested that belief, and the technology responded.

"It works 24 hours a day and is constantly monitoring the heart rhythm. If the heart develops a dangerous rhythm that could lead to a sudden cardiac arrest, then the device can rapidly detect it and deliver treatment — including a shock, if necessary, to restore a normal rhythm. It takes out the human factor and saves crucial time."

He was speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live.

Italian regulations ended his time at Inter Milan, but the Premier League and Bundesliga allow players with an ICD to compete.

It is unclear what this means for Eriksen’s career.
