Bayern Munich have set a Sunday (February 1) deadline for Dayot Upamecano to decide whether he wants to sign his contract offer, Christian Falk reports.

Progress has slowed considerably in talks with the French international ahead of his contract being set to expire in the summer.

Upamecano has two days to decide on his future before, one suspects, Bayern set plans in motion that eventually lead to the centre-half’s replacement in June.

“I heard just yesterday that he’s going to have to hurry up with this decision, as we heard the date of the deadline is this Sunday (February 1). So, the centre-back doesn’t have a lot of time left to decide!”

It’s not like any of the decision-makers at Säbener Straße will have much of a choice in the matter, given the state of Upamecano’s deteriorating contract situation.

They also have clear options waiting in the wings, with the likes of Nico Schlotterbeck understood to be very open to a move. Of course, that depends on there being space for the German to move into.

Good news for Manchester United and the Premier League

News that contract talks have stalled between Bayern and one of Europe’s top centre-halves will surely be celebrated outside of Munich.

Manchester United, for one, are known admirers of Dayot Upamecano, and there are rumours suggesting they could be in for a new defender this summer. That will almost certainly be the case if Harry Maguire departs in the next window, as some reporting indicates.

Likewise, Premier League rivals Liverpool may find themselves pulled in a similar direction given their own contract struggles with compatriot Ibrahima Konate.

And one can’t discount the possibility of Real Madrid raising their head above the parapet – bearing in mind their own propensity to snap up defenders on a Bosman.

Why Upamecano would interest Premier League clubs

The first thing to bear in mind is that Upamecano hasn’t been a particularly dominant threat (defensively or otherwise) in the air this season. So any Premier League club need to be certain that the Frenchman’s defensive partner can do a lot of the heavy lifting here.

That said, he’s able to contribute to build-up and chance creation, two factors that would surely be attractive to any outfit with Champions League qualification aspirations.

Additionally, his presence in the backline would appear to seriously benefit Vincent Kompany’s operations.

Assuming this translates over to the English top-flight, signing the 27-year-old on a free in the summer could be terrific business.
