Rival supporters, some also enthusiasts of bare-knuckle street fighting, briefly clashed near Stade Saint-Symphorien on Saturday afternoon ahead of Metz v PSG. Police quickly halted the fight.
According to L'Équipe, the scuffle broke out at around 14:00, roughly five hours before kick-off, on rue du Général Franiatte in Montigny-les-Metz, which borders the stadium. Fans from both sides had apparently arranged to meet despite a prefectural order banning self-declared PSG supporters from the city.
Officers moved in outside a bar and into the road to disperse roughly 100 people, including about 30 Parisians.
Tear gas was deployed and the groups scattered.
Participants later boasted on social media of taking part in an organised fight.
