Clever clause! Bayern stands to make a hefty transfer profit

FC Bayern continues to work on improving its transfer balance this summer. While the Munich club still wants to part ways with several players, a former Bayern player could now provide some unexpected additional revenue. Nestory Irankunda is apparently on the verge of a move to Sporting Lisbon—and the record champions would benefit significantly from it.

Nestory Irankunda didn’t leave FC Bayern until the summer of 2025, heading to Watford FC. On the field, the Australian national team player hasn’t played a role in Munich since then, but financially, he could now put a smile on the faces of the club’s officials at Säbener Straße.

As transfer expert Nicolò Schira reports, a move by the 20-year-old to Sporting Lisbon is in the final stages. According to the report, the top Portuguese club is set to pay around 22 million euros for the winger, including bonuses. According to Schira, an agreement has already been reached with Irankunda himself, and talks between the two clubs are said to be well advanced.

Bayern benefits from a resale clause

From FC Bayern’s perspective, the potential transfer is particularly interesting because the Munich club secured a lucrative resale share when they sold him to Watford.

According to media reports, this stands at 40 percent. Should Sporting indeed pay the reported 22 million euros, Bayern could earn up to an additional nine million euros—without even being involved in the negotiations themselves.

The sale to England alone had already brought the record champions around three million euros. Since Irankunda was signed in the summer of 2024 for only around 900,000 euros, the transfer would prove to be an extremely profitable deal in hindsight.

A Key Component of Eberl’s Transfer Strategy

Irankunda recently drew attention with strong performances at the World Cup, thereby establishing himself as a candidate for bigger challenges. The Australian also scored a goal in the tournament, sparking interest from several European clubs. According to Nicolò Schira, in addition to Sporting, clubs from Spain and England are said to have been monitoring the attacking player. Irankunda himself, however, reportedly prefers a move to Lisbon.

For Max Eberl, such a windfall would come at just the right time. Bayern continues to work on offsetting its transfer expenditures through player sales and additional revenue. Just recently, the Munich club benefited from a resale clause in Tanguy Nianzou’s transfer from Sevilla FC to OSC Lille.

Should the Irankunda transfer be officially finalized in the coming days, FC Bayern could book another sum in the millions—and Eberl would be a decisive step closer to his goal of achieving as balanced a transfer balance as possible.
