Club América said in a statement that Luis Ángel Malagón has suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery. The club added that his recovery timeframe will depend on how he progresses.

Malagón was injured during the match against Philadelphia Union, controlling the ball in the area then cutting past an opponent before going down, clutching his left ankle. He stayed on the turf as Rodolfo Cota began to warm up.

At first it did not look serious because there was no contact, but a closer replay showed a slight movement in his left ankle as he planted his foot.

The setback follows a difficult run in recent months, with a dip in form costing him the Mexico starting spot.

No return date was given. Such injuries typically take six to seven months to heal, so if all goes well he could be back for Clausura 2027.
