Sporting Lisbon are counting on the ‘heart factor’ to take Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Joao Palhinha to Portugal this summer.

Tottenham secured Premier League survival on the final day of the season with a 1-0 victory against Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Palhinha’s first-half goal proved decisive.

Since arriving on loan from Bayern Munich last summer, the Portugal international has become a key figure for the north London side, racking up 45 appearances while operating primarily in defensive midfield and occasionally filling in at centre-back when required.

Under Roberto De Zerbi, the 30-year-old featured in every league fixture and chipped in with two goals, taking his overall tally of goal contributions to ten across all competitions.

His parent club had been keen to postpone talks until after the World Cup in the hope of boosting his valuation, but with the midfielder omitted from the 26-man squad, a decision on his future could now arrive sooner than expected.

The London outfit are not alone in the race for the midfielder, however, with Turkish giants Besiktas and former side Sporting Lisbon also monitoring the situation closely.

Sporting Lisbon are eager to bring the midfielder back to Lisbon and have remained in regular contact with the player’s representatives, although his salary package remains the biggest hurdle despite Palhinha being willing to lower his wages to seal the move.

According to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Sporting Lisbon’s hierarchy believe the ‘heart factor’ could ultimately tip the scales in their favour as they attempt to lure the Portugal international back home.

The midfielder is believed to be keen on a return to Lisbon due to family considerations, though talks over a switch back to the Portuguese capital are still yet to get under way.

Bayern Munich paid Fulham £45m to sign Palhinha in 2024, with the midfielder still under contract until the summer of 2028.

However, it has already been made clear that the Portugal international does not feature in Vincent Kompany’s plans, which initially led to his loan move to Spurs.

Should the 30-year-old midfielder decide against committing his future to north London, then the Portuguese giants could swiftly emerge as the frontrunners for his signature.

A defining summer lies ahead for Palhinha, with a final decision on his future expected over the coming months.
