PSG endured a nightmare evening at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night. Beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in the Club World Cup final, the Parisians also lost their cool in a fiery finish marked by several incidents.
The frustration of the Parisian players boiled over in the wake of the humiliation at the hands of the Blues. Outplayed in every department, Luis Enrique's men collapsed from the very first minutes. Cole Palmer struck twice before the half-hour mark, then João Pedro hammered home just before the break to seal the fate of the final.
Tensions had already begun to rise during the match. João Neves was shown a straight red card in the 85th minute after pulling Marc Cucurella's hair.
The most striking incident of this turbulent evening came at the final whistle. Luis Enrique, visibly livid, slapped João Pedro in full view of the cameras. The Spanish coach completely lost his temper with Chelsea's Brazilian striker.
In the post-match press conference, Luis Enrique admitted his wrongdoing while downplaying the incident. For the Spanish manager, the situation could have been avoided.
"At the end of the match, there was a situation that could have been avoided. My intention, as always, was to separate the players so that no further problems would occur. We all should have prevented the situation from escalating. There was a lot of tension and pressure. I saw Maresca pushing players, and others pushing back. These are situations we should all avoid. So I separated the players," said Luis Enrique.
According to refereeing experts, FIFA may impose a severe sanction on Luis Enrique for striking an opponent in the face. A lengthy suspension is not out of the question and could even prevent him from leading his team in training.
