As the weeks pass there continues to be no news regarding the extension of Davide Calabria’s contract, and the idea of him leaving on a free is gaining momentum.
As Calciomercato.com report, Milan made the decision to invest in a new starting right-back by signing Emerson Royal from Spurs. Not only that, but Calabria has not even been able to fight for his spot because of injury issues, making just five appearances in total.
He started only the first two games in Serie A and in the match at San Siro against Liverpool in the UCL on September 17 due to a series of physical problems (adductor and now calf), for a total of 222 minutes on the pitch.
After Alessio Romagnoli’s move to Lazio in 2022, Calabria could seriously be the next club captain to leave on a free. The difference is that the full-back has only ever worn the Milan shirt and has been part of the club since 2007, making his senior debut in 2015-16 season.
He receives a salary of €2m net per year at the moment and despite the strong bond with the club, Calabria’s contract will expire in June 2025 and it seems that not even the player’s offer to maintain his current salary can convince the Milan management to keep him.
Where might he end up? A January sale seems difficult to imagine but both Galatasaray and Marseille have expressed an interest. Regardless of the date he leaves, his replacement is already considered to be in-house: Alex Jimenez, who is starring for the Futuro.
