Sam Coffey will wear the No.17 shirt for Manchester City across the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
The United States of America international has become the Blues’ first January acquisition, with the midfielder penning a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Joie Stadium.
It means the engine room enforcer will remain with Andrée Jeglertz’s side until the summer of 2029 and the 27-year-old will take the 17 which has been vacant since Poppy Pritchard’s season-long loan move to Durham.
Coffey has often worn the number when representing her nation and it is also the shirt she wore for previous club Portland Thorns in the NWSL.
During her time with her former employers, she helped them to the 2022 NWSL Championship and was named in the division’s Best XI in the same year and in 2023.
That success has also translated onto the international stage with the midfielder winning a Gold Medal at the 2024 Olympic Games as well as the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s Championship and the CONCACAF Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup in 2024.

Coffey becomes the sixth player to wear the No.17 since our professional relaunch in 2014 where Lynda Shepherd took the shirt for our maiden Barclays Women’s Super League campaign.
It was then passed onto Nikita Parris the following year and she donned the number for the entirety of her prolific City stay as the striker plundered 37 goals in 72 appearances before leaving in 2019.
Since then, it has also been worn by South Korean forward Lee Geum-min and Spaniard Vicky Losada before Pritchard collected the number when signing for City on deadline day in February 2024.
