A joint parliamentary committee has moved to relax pay limits for French sports federations, a change that could ease the FFF’s pursuit of Zidane.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Sénat and Assemblée nationale joint committee revisited a clause in the professional sport governance bill adopted on 29 June by the National Assembly, according to L'Équipe. The initial text planned to cap federation leaders’ salaries at about 12,000 euros gross per month, a restraint that had even been extended to employees in the chamber.
The committee instead set a new ceiling of 450,000 euros gross annually, aligned with the limit for the chair of the board of a state industrial and commercial public establishment. It can be exceeded with a derogation from the Sports Minister.
During the debate, deputy Karl Olive, a volunteer member of the LFP board that day, questioned how the FFF could hire the best national coach under such a framework, citing Zinédine Zidane as an example.
This mechanism could allow FFF president Philippe Diallo to move for Zidane as Didier Deschamps’ successor, if the Sports Ministry authorises any higher package.
