Assane Diao left his teammates before halftime during Como's away fixture against AS Roma in Serie A on Monday night. Cesc Fabregas confirmed his Senegalese player's injury after Como's defeat to AS Roma (1-0) on December 15, 2025.
The coach of the Lombard club provided more details about the nature of his player's injury during the post-match press conference.
“Diao suffered a flexor muscle injury during a counter-attack,” coach Fabregas stated.
In his post-match comments, the Como manager also addressed his tense exchanges with the coach of the Lions of Teranga. He has become a target for Senegalese fans online following Diao's injury.
“It's really difficult to be honest in these post-match comments, because I'm criticized no matter what, but I'll try. I'm a big fan of national teams and I'm always delighted when my players are called up—it's a huge honor for them. I simply asked for a bit of common sense not to call him up, because this player has barely played in the last eight months, has been constantly injured, and hasn't been able to regain his rhythm.”
Prior to this recent injury, Diao had returned to training and rejoined the Como squad after a lengthy absence that kept him sidelined for several months. His inclusion in Senegal's CAN squad had already sparked debate about his physical condition, with voices from the club calling for more caution.
