Conmebol has rejected River’s appeal and upheld Santiago Beltrán’s one-match ban, ruling him out of next Wednesday’s Copa Sudamericana Group H tie against Bragantino of Brazil.
The governing body deemed correct Paraguayan referee Derlis López’s decision to dismiss the 20-year-old during the win over Carabobo in Venezuela.
Beltrán was sent off after leaving his area to halt a run from Colombian forward Joshuan Berríos, an incident checked by VAR and judged as denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
River argued in their appeal that the red card was wrong, insisting Beltrán was not the last man and citing comparable cases, including that of Ecuadorian Gonzalo Plata.
The suspension opens the way for Franco Armani’s return. The captain has recovered from Achilles tendon fibrosis and is fit to return to the starting XI.
He was on the bench in the last game against Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata and is targeting a comeback at the Estadio Monumental.
His last official appearance was on 22 February, when he played the first half of the defeat to Vélez Sarsfield. He has not featured since.
