Lee Grant faces a busy summer as Walsall head coach, with four calls on squad and leadership. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the agenda includes Connor Barrett’s future, contract talks for Albert Adomah and Rico Browne, and the captaincy after Jamille Matt’s exit.
Barrett has started eight League Two games in 2026 and has 12 months left on his deal after falling out of favour under Mat Sadler and interim Darren Byfield.
The 24-year-old hit double figures for assists in 2024-25 and opened his second season with three goals in 11 matches. He then started only two of the last 17 league fixtures and has been linked with a move, with Wigan Athletic reported to be leading the chase.
Walsall are in talks with Adomah and Browne, whose contracts expire on 30 June. Browne has been offered fresh terms, with reports suggesting he has turned them down, a claim unconfirmed by the club. Adomah should be the priority if there is a choice, after scoring eight goals last season.
With Jamille Matt gone, a new captain is required. Alex Pattison looks suited to the armband, while Adomah would be another option if he re-signs. Grant could also hand it to an incoming recruit, given the lack of seniority.
2026-27 fixtures are out on 25 June. The Carabao Cup first round is 7-9 August, and League Two starts 14-16 August. Pre-season opponents are yet to be confirmed, with an announcement possible this week and a likely start around the second weekend of July.
