Manchester United are reportedly preparing to step up their January pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Conor Gallagher after a big decision made by Ruben Amorim.
Gallagher only joined Atletico in 2024 from Chelsea, but already, his future at the Wanda Metropoliano Stadium is the subject of intense speculation.
United have been credited with an interest in the player heading into the January transfer window. During the summer, United’s efforts were mostly geared towards bolstering the attacking department. More than £200 million was spent on this objective as the club brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that on deadline day, United were offered the chance to sign Gallagher.
However, the club opted against taking up this opportunity, choosing instead to snap up goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
But, United’s interest in Gallagher has not gone away. He has been tipped to replace Casemiro and the England international is thought to be keen on a return to the Premier League.
There have also been suggestions that Atletico are prepared to sanction an exit in January.
Now, according to Football Insider, Amorim has given United the approval to go after Gallagher.
“Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Conor Gallagher ahead of January after getting the green light from Ruben Amorim, sources have told Football Insider.”
“Sources say that Man United are still keeping an eye on Gallagher and see him as a potential replacement for Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield.”
“Higher-ups at the Red Devils believe that Gallagher is a better fit for the Portuguese manager’s system than the 20-year-old.”
Football Insider note that United may have to ward off competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace to land Gallagher.
