Conor Townsend is undergoing a medical at West Bromwich Albion ahead of a return to The Hawthorns and is poised to sign a one-year deal on a free transfer. The 33-year-old left-back previously spent six years with the club.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, he departed in 2024 after more than 200 appearances for Albion.

He joined Ipswich Town in a £750,000 move and made 10 appearances across two seasons, the first in the Premier League, before an ACL injury in a pre-season friendly disrupted last term. He was released this summer after Ipswich sealed a return to the Premier League.

Townsend is well known to head coach James Morrison, who coached for most of the defender’s earlier stay, and the pair were briefly team-mates when he arrived in 2018.

Albion believe his experience and knowhow will complement a dressing room refreshed by younger, hungry recruits in recent windows. He turns 34 this season and fits their search for left-back cover for star man Callum Styles.

Styles was the club’s double player of the season last term and, with no senior cover currently in that position, his workload was heavy as the Hungary international missed one league fixture. Charlie Taylor covered the role on loan from Southampton last season.

Townsend will be the Baggies’ fifth summer recruit after forwards Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Barney Stewart, defender Carter Pinnington and goalkeeper Matt Ingram.
