Laura Coombs says she’s pleased with City response to win the penalty shootout after our 3-3 draw with Newcastle in the Subway Women’s League Cup.

Andrée Jeglertz’s side came away from the Group A clash with two points after prevailing 7-6 on spot-kicks after an eventful 90 minutes at Gateshead International Arena.

Having conceded first to Lois Joel’s stunner, goals from Coombs, Yui Hasegawa and Gracie Prior gave us a 3-1 lead before the hosts scored twice in the final 10 minutes to earn a draw in normal time.

Although Coombs was disappointed to see our healthy advantage cancelled out, she was buoyed by our reaction to win on penalties.

And she also praised Newcastle’s determination and work rate during the League Cup assignment.

“Penalties are never nice,” she explained.

“You never know when they're going to go your way or not, so we're happy we picked up the two points.

“[Newcastle] had a lot of fight. They scored first before we scored three, but they still had the fight to the end.

“We let ourselves down a little bit in the last 10 minutes, but all credit to them because they pushed to the end.”

The shootout triumph over Newcastle signalled our last outing before October’s international break.

It means City will return to action in 13 days’ time with a meeting West Ham at the Joie Stadium on Saturday 1 November at 12:00 (UK).

And Coombs believes the pause in domestic action comes at a good time for Jeglertz’s side.

She added: “I think everyone needs a little break.

“I feel like we always come back really sharp when everyone goes away and has time for themselves so I'm looking forward to getting back to it [afterwards].”
