Corberán left without right flank at Valencia as Meunier chooses Sunderland and Rioja injured | OneFootball

Weeks after mapping out a right flank of Thomas Meunier at right-back and Luis Rioja or a proven winger, Carlos Corberán now has neither. According to Superdeporte, that plan has collapsed.

Meunier was the first to fall away. Corberán and Ron Gourlay had a verbal agreement, but after his World Cup elimination the Belgian accepted Sunderland’s offer, with a stronger sporting project and better terms.

Valencia have scoured the market at right-back, with targets including Andrés García, Toljan, Mikelbrencis and Ehizibue, and with Chrino and Arnau now best placed. With none signed, Corberán has turned to academy duo Gamón and Monferrer, and one of them will step up.

The setback has deepened with Rioja sustaining a tear in his right quadriceps during the friendly against Stoke City. The winger will not be ready for the Celta opener, and with Diego López also sidelined the choices are to restore Danjuma to the flank or back academy prospect David Otorbi.

Reinforcements out wide have yet to arrive. Valencia are working on a winger, with Largie Ramazani the preferred target, but any agreement is distant. Market priority had been right-back, now the wing is urgent too.

Barely 20 days after drafting his ideal XI, Corberán is without the right-side players he envisaged. He must improvise with Danjuma, Gamón or Monferrer, or wait for the market.
