Valencia are moving to sharpen their set-piece work by appointing Darío Navarro to Carlos Corberán’s staff. According to As, the Valencian coach, regarded as a specialist, previously worked on Alessio Lisci’s staff.
Last season under Corberán, set pieces were a glaring weakness, especially in defence. The attacking return from dead balls was limited.
Osasuna turned set pieces into a major weapon, finishing with 15 goals from those situations, the second most in LaLiga. Those accounted for 15 of their 45 goals.
Defensively, Osasuna conceded only eight from set plays, the fourth fewest in LaLiga.
Valencia, by contrast, scored 10 from set pieces, the ninth most, but let in 12, the fourth highest.
With Navarro arriving from Osasuna, Corberán aims to raise standards in a phase that often decides tight matches after a season when European and relegation places were settled late and by fine margins.
