Corinthians beat Atlético-MG at home, Maycon nets a stunner

Corinthians faced Atlético-MG early Saturday evening, October 18, at Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 29th round of the Brazilian Championship and won 1–0. The Corinthians goal was scored by midfielder Maycon. With the result, the Alvinegro provisionally climbs to 12th place with 36 points (nine wins, nine draws and 11 losses – 31 goals scored and 35 conceded).

The coaching staff could not count on the following players for the match against the Minas Gerais side: center-backs André Ramalho (in the final phase of physical transition after a muscle injury) and Gustavo Henrique (suspended), midfielders José Martínez (coach’s decision), André (sprain in the right ankle) and André Carrillo (final phase of transition after a ligament injury in the left ankle), in addition to forward Vitinho (recovering from knee surgery).

Given this, coach Dorival Júnior started the match with: Hugo Souza; Matheuzinho, Tchoca, Cacá and Matheus Bidu; Maycon (Fabrizio Angileri), Raniele, Breno Bidon (Charles) and Rodrigo Garro (Ryan); Memphis Depay (Gui Negão) and Yuri Alberto (Ángel Romero). The bench options were: Felipe Longo, Félix Torres, Fabrizio Angileri, Hugo Farias, Ryan, Charles, Luiz Gustavo, Dieguinho, Talles Magno, Kayke, Ángel Romero and Gui Negão.

Atlético-MG lineup

Coach Jorge Sampaoli sent out the following team to start the match: Everson; Saravia, Vitor Hugo, Ruan, Júnior Alonso and Caio Paulista; Fausto Vera, Alan Franco and Igor Gomes; Biel and Hulk.

Refereeing

The referee was Alex Gomes Stefano (RJ), assisted by Rodrigo Figueiredo Henrique Corrêa (RJ) and Francisco Chaves Bezerra Jr. (PE). The fourth official and VAR were, respectively, Yuri Elino Ferreira da Cruz (SC) and Daniel Nobre Bins (RS).

First half

In the opening minutes of the match between Corinthians and Atlético-MG, the Corinthians side had greater control of possession, initially mostly in their defensive half. The Alvinegro began by building out with three players (Cacá, João Pedro Tchoca and Raniele).

At eight minutes, Atlético-MG put together a good move down the left and forward Biel blasted over from the edge of the box. In the next play, left-back Matheus Bidu crossed to the top of the box and forward Yuri Alberto shot over the goal. With almost 15 minutes played, Corinthians had near-total control of possession, while the Minas team looked to pounce on a mistake for a counterattack.

Halfway through the first half, Corinthians and Atlético-MG had still not created any clear chances, with neither keeper tested. The Parque São Jorge club continued to control possession, though often in their own half.

At 30 minutes, Corinthians built a good move from the back through Rodrigo Garro, reaching the left for Matheus Bidu, who got to the byline and pulled back, but Atlético-MG’s defense cleared. Six minutes later, another chance for the Alvinegro.

Memphis Depay, on the left, after a pass from Rodrigo Garro, found Matheus Bidu on the byline, who crossed toward the top of the box, and midfielder Maycon, unmarked, shot over! At 38 minutes, Memphis Depay received with his back to goal, turned and picked out Yuri Alberto, who went one-on-one with center-back Ruan of Atlético-MG and had his shot deflected for a corner.

From the corner, Everson punched clear. Afterwards, following a scramble in the box, Atlético-MG’s defense cleared again. In the following moves, Atlético’s winger Biel drove at João Pedro Thoca one-on-one and crossed into the area, with a deflection, but no one arrived to finish.

At 43 minutes, Matheus Bidu was played in on the byline and crossed toward forward Yuri Alberto, who challenged the Atlético-MG defender and the ball was cleared. At 45, the referee added two minutes. Two minutes later, at 47, end of the first half: Corinthians 0–0 Atlético-MG.

Second half

To start the second half, coach Dorival Júnior made no changes. Just 35 seconds into the period, midfielder Maycon played a low pass to Matheuzinho on the byline, who crossed onto Yuri Alberto’s head, but he missed the chance!

At three minutes, Saravia won a duel with Matheuzinho on the right byline and crossed toward center-back Vitor Hugo, who headed off the crossbar of keeper Hugo Souza. In the next play, Corinthians’ first goal! The Alvinegro launched a counterattack until the ball reached Rodrigo Garro in the middle; he fed Maycon, who beat his marker and smashed it into the back of the net!

Score: Corinthians 1–0 Atlético-MG! At six minutes, right-back Natanael was played in on the byline and crossed into the six-yard box, but midfielder Raniele cleared the danger! Five minutes later, Memphis Depay switched play to the right for Matheuzinho, who crossed for Rodrigo Garro, whose shot was blocked by defender Ruan.

At 13 minutes, Yuri Alberto took a quick throw-in to midfielder Rodrigo Garro, who put Memphis Depay through on goal to shoot, across goal, wide. In the next move, forward Hulk made an individual play and shot wide. At 16 minutes, the Alvinegro built well through the middle with Memphis and midfielder Maycon shot over from the edge of the box!

Halfway through the second half – 25 minutes – Corinthians maintained volume, but Atlético-MG began to press more, especially after some more attacking substitutions, such as Dudu and Bernard. At 27 minutes, Dudu received at the top of the box, cut inside and shot toward the middle of Hugo Souza’s goal; the keeper saved at the second attempt.

At 32 minutes, the first two changes for Corinthians: midfielder Ryan and forward Gui Negão came on for midfielder Rodrigo Garro and forward Memphis Depay. Shortly before, Garro had played Matheus Bidu through one-on-one with goalkeeper Everson, but the number 21’s shot was blocked. However, offside was then called.

With almost 40 minutes of the first half gone, the scenario remained the same. Atlético-MG tried to press Corinthians in search of the equalizer, but without effectiveness. The Alvinegro, when in possession, looked to manage the result. A minute later, midfielder Gustavo Scarpa took a free-kick from distance and, after a looping header, Hugo Souza came off his line to claim the ball.

At 43 minutes, two more changes for Corinthians: midfielder Charles and forward Ángel Romero came on for midfielder Breno Bidon and forward Yuri Alberto, respectively. When the clock hit 45, the referee added five more minutes. Two minutes later, the last change for the Alvinegro: midfielder Maycon left the field for left-back Fabrizio Angileri.

In the last play, goalkeeper Hugo Souza came off his line to punch a cross and collided with center-back Vitor Hugo after a cross from midfielder Gustavo Scarpa. The referee added one more minute. At 52, full-time. Score: Corinthians 1–0 Atlético-MG!

After facing Atlético-MG, in Itaquera, in the Brazilian Championship, Corinthians remains focused on the national competition. Next Saturday, at 4 p.m. (Brasília time), the Alvinegro will visit Vitória, at Barradão Stadium, for the 30th round of the national competition.
