Corinthians have confirmed Fernando Diniz as their new head coach. The club said in a statement on Monday night, less than 24 hours after Dorival Júnior was dismissed following a 1-0 home defeat by Internacional in the Campeonato Brasileiro that extended the winless run to nine matches.

Diniz arrives on a contract running until the end of 2026. He will be joined by assistant Léo Porto and fitness coach Wagner Berteli.

In a club video, he hailed the Fiel’s intensity and spoke of emotion, courage and playing with maximum commitment, adding that he is ready and fully aligned with the stands.

He had been the board’s priority during the search for a successor, with talks on Monday afternoon aligning expectations and leading to a verbal agreement before the deal was sealed.

Corinthians are working to register Diniz so he can be on the touchline on Thursday, when they face Platense at 21h in the first round of the Copa Libertadores group stage at the Ciudad de Vicente López.

The 52-year-old is taking charge of the 16th club of his career, having coached sides in São Paulo state as well as Athletico-PR, Fluminense, São Paulo, Santos, Vasco, Cruzeiro and Brazil as interim. At Vasco, his most recent job, he oversaw 56 matches, winning 17, drawing 16 and losing 23 for a 39.9% record, finishing runners-up in the Copa do Brasil to Corinthians. His honours at Fluminense include the 2023 Campeonato Carioca, the 2023 Libertadores and the 2024 Recopa Sudamericana.
