The provisional suspension of Romeu Tuma Júnior as president of Corinthians’ Deliberative Council is in doubt after council vice-president Leonardo Pantaleão questioned Monday's meeting and said he will not assume the role unless its legal validity is recognised.
According to Globo.com, president Osmar Stabile convened the session to vote on removing Tuma Júnior, and some councillors, including Pantaleão, stayed away citing alleged breaches of the club’s statute.
Of 290 councillors, 137 attended. The tally was 115 in favour of suspending Tuma Júnior, 15 against and seven abstentions.
Pantaleão said in a note that any legal effect depends on the regularity of the act, and he raised significant statutory questions about the meeting’s conduct.
He added that, until the meeting’s validity is recognised, there is no formal change in the council presidency and any assumption is not automatic. Institutional acts will follow the Social Statute until compliance is verified.
The dispute sits within a push to reform the statute that could grant Fiel Torcedor voting rights in presidential elections. On the ninth of March councillors were called to vote point by point, but before ballots Stabile accused Tuma Júnior of interference and of threatening him on club premises.
The remarks sparked anger, with shoving and arguments stopping proceedings. Tuma Júnior ended the meeting and set a general assembly for 18 April that could ratify the changes. Days later, Stabile filed a complaint with the Ethics and Discipline Commission.
