Corinthians’ Deliberative Council has approved the expulsion of former president Andrés Sanchez from the club’s membership, with the formal proclamation still pending, according to Meu Timao.
The ballot closed with 167 votes cast, 112 in favour, 49 against and six abstentions.
The session began with the Ethics Committee’s opinion being read, then Sanchez’s defence delivered oral arguments. Lawyer Alexandre Imbriani of Fernando José da Costa’s firm represented the former president. Councillors then voted to expel or retain him as a member.
Life members backed expulsion 16-14. Triennial councillors later voted 108-50 in favour, and some members left as the final count was readied. A push from former president Mário Gobbi for alternative sanctions such as a warning or suspension was rejected.
Supporters gathered outside Parque São Jorge celebrated the result. Alê, president of Gaviões, praised those present and warned club officials the fanbase would not ease the pressure on those seen to harm the club. Organised groups are now turning their focus to a possible expulsion case involving another former president, Augusto Melo.
