Corinthians edge Velo Clube with late winner in Paulistão

On the evening of this Sunday (25th), Corinthians faced Velo Clube at Benitão for the fifth round of the first phase of the Paulista Championship and won by a score of 1 x 0. The winning goal was scored in the final minutes by forward Yuri Alberto. With this result, the Corinthians team rose to fourth place in the overall standings, with eight points earned (two wins, two draws, and one loss – six goals scored and five conceded).

Dorival Júnior's coaching staff could not count on the following players for the match: defender Cacá (left internal oblique muscle strain), midfielder José Martínez (still in Venezuela awaiting passport clearance), and forward Memphis Depay (physical conditioning).

Given this, Corinthians started the game with: Hugo Souza; Milans (Matheuzinho), Gabriel Paulista, André Ramalho, Hugo Farias; Charles (Raniele), André Luiz, Matheus Pereira (Yuri Alberto) and Rodrigo Garro (Breno Bidon); Gui Negão (Pedro Raul) and Vitinho. The substitutes included: Felipe Longo, Matheuzinho, Breno Bidon, Yuri Alberto, Gustavo Henrique, Raniele, Pedro Raul, Carrillo, Matheus Bidu, Kayke, João Pedro, and Dieguinho.

Velo Clube was lined up by Pintado as follows: Marcelo Carné, Ynaiã, Islan, Betão, Marcelo, Zé Mario, Luiz Otavio, Matheus Norton, Daniel Amorim, Sillas, and Rodrigo Alves.

Refereeing

The match referee was Flávio Rodrigues de Souza (SP), assisted by Daniel Luís Marques (SP) and Welber Venancio da Silva (SP). The VAR was handled by Márcio Henrique de Gois (SP).

Next Commitment

After facing Velo Clube away, Corinthians turns its attention to the debut in the Brazilian Championship. Next Wednesday (28th), at 8 PM (Brasília time), the Alvinegro hosts Bahia in Santos for the first round of the competition.

First Half

In the initial minutes, the match was very scrappy and considered poor, with Corinthians and Velo Clube unable to find spaces to penetrate the defenses and committing passing errors. From the middle to the end of the first half, the game started to heat up with Timão finding a way through long-distance shots.

The first dangerous attempt came at 20 minutes when Vitinho took the ball on the left side, made an individual play, and shot from outside for a good save by goalkeeper Marcelo Carné, who also had to work on another long-distance shot, this time from midfielder André.

At 33, midfielder Charles looked for a passing option at the edge of the box but found all players closed by the Velo team and opted for a long-distance rocket that required another save from Carné, who shone against long-range shots.

Velo, on the other hand, had its first good chance at 41, when they had a corner, and defender Islan rose alone among Corinthians' defenders and managed a header that scared goalkeeper Hugo Souza.

In injury time, forward Vitinho suffered a hard tackle from right-back Ynaiã, who received a yellow card, in a play that generated a lot of complaints from Corinthians players, who demanded a red card, not given by the match referee.

Second Half

Right at the start of the second half, Corinthians made a play on the left side, with Vitinho and Garro exchanging passes that ended in a dangerous cross aiming for Gui Negão, but Velo's defense cut it before the number 56 could finish.

Shortly after, Gui Negão again had a chance in an individual play, shooting low with danger, passing by the right side of the goal defended by Marcelo Carné.

From the middle to the end of the second half, Dorival Jr bet on the entry of more players considered starters in the figures of Matheuzinho, Raniele, Breno Bidon, and Yuri Alberto, but the changes had little effect until in injury time Vitinho made a play on the left side, crossed, and on the rebound from goalkeeper Marcelo Carné, only confirmed it into the net, giving a hard-fought victory to the Corinthians team.
