Corinthians group’s statute reform proposal surprises after talks

In early June, the Central do Timão exclusively published an interview with the Coletivo Voz Corinthiana, a group of fans who mobilized to gather suggestions from the crowd and create a project to change the internal legislation of the club, adapting it to current norms and bringing more governance and professionalism to the club. Three months later, the group finally completed its work and submitted its project to the club.

The meeting took place last Friday, 12, at Parque São Jorge, with the president of the Deliberative Council, Romeu Tuma Junior. According to a note published by the collective the next day, the meeting lasted about four hours in the afternoon, and the agenda was the discussion of the document constructed from the collaboration of more than 800 people. A technical support material was also delivered to the proposal, along with a document with signatures from 1,100 fans who declared support for the initiative.

In its statement, the movement described the day as remarkable, celebrated the fact that the ideas of the common fan were finally within Parque São Jorge, and detailed the main topics discussed during the conversation: voting rights for the Fiel Torcedor program member, creation of a Transparency Portal, definition of objective criteria for occupying positions, strengthening of compliance and institution of individual and proportional voting for the election of the Deliberative Council.

Finally, the collective assessed that the meeting and the content of the conversation represented a "demonstration of openness to democratic debate". Even in the face of disagreements, the president of the Deliberative Council signaled the possibility of delegating to the club's members the decision on certain proposals, instead of filtering them in earlier stages of the Corinthians statute reform process.

Behind the scenes of the meeting

The Central do Timão found out that a condition was established for the meeting: the guarantee that no councilor or representative of the club's board had a relationship with the collective or accompanied its representatives at the meeting. The requirement was made by Tuma so that the ideas of the group, which is independent and gathered ideas from the common fan, would not be politically captured at Parque São Jorge.

During the meeting, the movement's proposal was received with a mix of surprise and admiration, especially because of the depth and complexity of the document delivered, which not only addresses all the current bottlenecks of the club's statute but also included a technical material that adapted all the ideas according to the notice of the reform itself, "saving" a job that would demand a lot of time from the Statute Reform Commission of the CD.

With this, the group's proposal stood out among others received in recent months, coming from various sources, such as Corinthians' councilors and members. According to reports received by the newsroom, most of the suggestions received so far were less comprehensive, sometimes formulated outside the desired standards, with content often generic or not very solid.

The investigation by the Central do Timão also found that the lengthy duration of the meeting (about four hours) was a direct reflection of Tuma's interest in learning more details about the collective's project. Various items of the proposal were debated and even compared with similar points present in the current draft of the reform, which was in the possession of the CD president – according to reports, there are more convergences than divergences between the documents of the collective and the Deliberative Council.

Some disagreements, however, were pointed out. One of them involves the term for the acquisition of political rights: while the CD's draft maintains five years, the collective proposes a reduction to two. After the debate on the subject, it was agreed that both proposals could be submitted to the members' vote, who will decide which one will be part of the new club statute.

Another widely discussed point was the movement's proposal to elect councilors by individual and proportional voting, that is, each slate would elect a number of councilors proportional to the number of votes it received in relation to the total. Tuma pondered, however, that a detail of the proposal – the so-called "performance clause", which would require a minimum of individual votes for the candidate to become a councilor – could make the practical implementation of the idea difficult.

Next steps

The statute reform proposal conceived by the Coletivo Voz Corinthiana was the last one received by Tuma before the finalization of the draft of the proposal that will be carried forward, following the schedule announced by the CD president recently. According to the announced dates, such a draft should be presented later this month of September.

Then, the project should be debated internally during the month of October, not only in relation to its content but also in relation to the format of the vote itself in the Deliberative Council – it is intended to divide the project so that it is voted on in thematic blocks, so that the rejection of a specific item does not make the approval of a document of all the items that are accepted unfeasible.

Finally, the months of November and December were reserved for the votes themselves. In November, the CD will be called to analyze the proposal, and in December the members will be called to deliberate on the document in assembly. The goal is to start 2026 with the new statute in force.
