Corinthians keeper owns up to mistake in Santos equaliser

Corinthians drew 1-1 against Santos at Vila Belmiro in a match valid for the fourth round of the 2026 Paulista Championship. The goals were scored by Yuri Alberto for Timão, and in the final minutes of the match, Gabigol equalized for Santos.

After the game, goalkeeper Hugo Souza lamented the draw and began his press conference by admitting he made a mistake on the goal scored by Peixe from a free kick taken by Gabigol: “It's a fast ball, setting up the wall there is difficult, the ball is in the middle of the semi-circle. Gabriel managed to hit the only space he had. I was unfortunate in the play, it's a complicated ball, I was unfortunate in the play.”

One of the team leaders, Hugo also made a point to criticize the refereeing and highlighted the direct interference in the result: “It was clear that it was a refereeing error. Hugo Souza also criticized the pitch and lighting at Vila Belmiro: “The pitch at Vila is a good pitch, it deserves a little more care, it's a bit uneven, it's green, but uneven, it deserves a little more care. A club the size of Santos needs more care, the lighting here is dark. A club the size of Santos can have better lighting, pitch, and locker room conditions.”

It is worth remembering that Corinthians will play at the rival's stadium next Wednesday (28), against Bahia, after an agreement made between the boards of Corinthians and Santos so that Timão could play on the same day as the opponent in the Supercopa do Brasil, Flamengo, aiming for sports equity and equality in physical conditions between the teams.
