Corinthians lose opening Brasileirão match for first time since 2021

On the evening of this Wednesday (28), Corinthians faced Bahia at Vila Belmiro in the first round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship and ended up being defeated by a score of 2 x 1. The Corinthians' goal was scored by midfielder Breno Bidon at the beginning of the second half. The result left the Alvinegro in 16th place in the tournament, still without any points.

Besides the setback, Corinthians was defeated in Brazilian Championship debuts for the first time since 2021. In that year, on May 30, the Alvinegro was beaten by Atlético-GO at Neo Química Arena by the minimum score. Since then, there had been two wins and two draws in the first rounds of the Brasileirão. In 2022 and 2023, victories over Botafogo and Cruzeiro by 3 x 1 and 2 x 1, respectively, at Engenhão and Neo Química Arena.

In turn, in 2024 and 2025, a goalless draw with Atlético-MG in Itaquera and 1 x 1 with Bahia at Arena Fonte Nova. Now, since the start of the points system Brasileirão in 2003, the Alvinegro has accumulated seven wins, four draws, and nine losses in the first rounds of the competition – 25 goals scored and 29 conceded – 41.6% success rate.

After the defeat in the Brazilian Championship debut against Bahia, playing as the home team at Vila Belmiro, Corinthians turns its attention to the Supercopa do Brasil final. Next Sunday (1), at 4 pm (Brasília time), the Alvinegro will face Flamengo at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília.
