Jesse Lingard should sign a pre-contract with Corinthians this weekend, allowing the club to issue his airline ticket to Brazil.
According to Globo.com, agreement with the player’s camp is virtually complete after talks accelerated this week, with minor edits to the paperwork made on Friday.
Hopes of completing it on Friday faded due to those adjustments and the time difference between Brazil and England.
Once the pre-contract is signed, Lingard is due in São Paulo early next week for medical tests. If all is well, he will sign a deal running to the end of this year.
Next Tuesday’s transfer deadline is not an issue because he is a free agent, having left FC Seoul late last year.
He was offered to Corinthians as well as other Brazilian and overseas clubs, passed the football department’s review, and received head coach Dorival Júnior’s approval.
Lingard spent around two decades at Manchester United including his academy years, and also played for West Ham and Nottingham Forest, plus smaller English sides.
He and Netherlands forward Memphis Depay overlapped at United in 2015 and 2016, featuring in 31 matches, with 22 together on the pitch.
Across the last two seasons with FC Seoul he made 67 appearances, scoring 19 goals and providing 11 assists. He also featured for England at the 2018 World Cup, scoring one and assisting one, and was last called up in 2021.
