Corinthians playmaker nominated for Queen of America award

After a year of ups and downs for the Corinthians women's team, one member of the victorious squad has the chance to be awarded the Queen of America: attacking midfielder Gabi Zanotti. The award is presented by the Uruguayan newspaper El País to the best female player in South America.

The idol of the Alvinegro Paulista will have two competitors in the race for the award, one of whom is Brazilian. The rivals of Corinthians’ number 10 are Paraguayan forward Claudia Martínez, from Olímpia-PAR, and attacking midfielder Marta, the most prominent player in the history of Brazilian women's football, who plays for Orlando City in the United States.

Gabi Zanotti finished the season with 19 goals and two assists in 42 matches, playing a key role in winning the Brazilian Championship and the Copa Libertadores. Her performance earned her a spot in the Brasileirão Team of the Year and she also received the Best Player award at the Bola de Prata, an award organized by ESPN.

If she is named Queen of America, Gabi Zanotti will reach a historic milestone: the first player to win the award twice. The attacking midfielder received the honor just last year, in 2024, when Timão also won the Libertadores. On that occasion, she finished the tournament as top scorer, with five goals.

The number 10, in fact, is living out the final days of her contract with Corinthians, which ends on December 31. Still without a renewal agreement, she has totaled 251 matches, 84 goals, and 31 assists for the club, with 18 titles won.

The Queen of America award was first presented in the 2021 season, with Tamires from Corinthians as the winner. In 2022, the winner was Colombian Linda Caicedo, while in 2023 the award went to Priscila, who played for Internacional at the time. Now, there is a chance for Zanotti to win the award for the second consecutive time.

As is done every year, the magazine will only announce the grand winner of the award on December 31, the last day of the year. In men's football, the contenders for the award are Giorgian de Arrascaeta from Flamengo, Lionel Messi from Inter Miami-USA, and Adrián Martínez from Racing-ARG.
