Corinthians pressed over ex-president’s suspicious card spending

The São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-SP) has requested information from Corinthians regarding about 50 expenses considered suspicious, made with the corporate card during the administration of former president Andrés Sanchez (2018 to 2020). Prosecutor Cássio Conserino set a deadline of ten calendar days for the club to respond, according to information first reported by Gazeta Esportiva.

Andrés Sanchez gave testimony to the MP-SP last Thursday, the 2nd, virtually, in the process investigating possible irregularities in the use of the club's corporate cards. The former president admitted to having used the card on trips to Tibau do Sul (RN) and Fernando de Noronha (PE) in 2020 and emphasized that he has already reimbursed R$ 15,000 to Corinthians, awaiting a response from the finance department to pay the monetary correction.

Corinthians reportedly received the request with surprise, indicating difficulty in meeting the demand. Also according to the outlet, the board claimed not to have control mechanisms that allow them to identify in detail the daily routines of previous presidents, beyond the invoices already delivered to the MP. The tendency is that the response to the prosecutor will point out limitations in providing the required cooperation.

It is worth remembering that the investigations also involve former presidents Duilio Monteiro Alves and Augusto Melo, with inquiries that even include suspicions of relationships with shell companies and possible involvement with criminal organizations. The prosecutor decided to separate the investigations, with Andrés Sanchez's case likely to be the first to be taken to court through a formal complaint.

The suspicious expenses of the former presidents came to light in June, after documents were published revealing expenses with no apparent connection to the club, such as trips and jewelry purchases. Andrés Sanchez's defense tried to have the case dismissed, arguing that there were no clear rules regarding the use of the card, but the request was denied.

Andrés and Duilio still risk being temporarily removed from positions in the club's internal bodies, such as the Advisory Council (CORI), where they are lifetime members, if the request in this regard, made by the MP, is granted by the courts. No decision has yet been made on the request, which was filed in September.
