Sunday’s Corinthians v Palmeiras derby in the Campeonato Brasileiro will introduce in-stadium referee announcements. According to Meu Timao, the referee will explain decisions directly to supporters and TV audiences.
The rollout is progressive, limited initially to two fixtures per round. This weekend the system will be used at Fluminense v Flamengo at the Maracanã and at Neo Química Arena for Corinthians v Palmeiras. It also covers checks and reviews.
Plans point to a gradual expansion to all 10 games in a round. The main aim is public clarity, with the referee setting out what occurred on the pitch and the final decision.
Another change begins this round, with VAR images being shared for the outcome of reviews, in line with international standards. The process of drawing the offside lines will continue to be handled internally.
Sunday’s derby will be refereed by Flávio Rodrigues de Souza, assisted by Alex Ang Ribeiro and Nailton Júnior de Sousa Oliveira, all from São Paulo. Daniel Nobre Bins, from Rio Grande do Sul, will oversee VAR.
