Corinthians win case, avoid losses with free contract termination

Last Wednesday, September 3, Corinthians achieved a victory in court that spared them from paying a million-dollar amount. The end of the lawsuit against SPR Sports was coordinated by the club's legal department, with the support of lawyer Dr. Ricardo Bianchini and his office.

The partnership between SPR Sports and Corinthians took place in the Poderoso Timão store franchises, with the company having exclusivity in selling textile products not manufactured by Nike since 2008. However, the club expressed dissatisfaction, alleging sales outside official stores and consequently reducing royalties for the People’s Team.

The sale of products that contain fabric (t-shirts, sweaters, etc.) represents about 80% of the revenue that Corinthians receives from product sales. Therefore, the reduction in royalties directly impacts the club's budget.

In 2022, the board decided to file a lawsuit to terminate the contract with the company after an attempt to amicably break the agreement. With the judicial victory, the club will not have to pay anything to break free from the contract, avoiding a fine of approximately R$ 20 million.

If Corinthians had been defeated in court, the contract with SPR Sports would have returned in full, including the exclusivity clauses. Thus, agreements with Approve and Centauro, for example, would have issues with commercialization. In the new contract with Nike, the club also removed exclusivity.
