There was a lot of attention on Santiago Gimenez before his return to face Feyenoord last night, but unfortunately he had a night to forget.
As Corriere dello Sport (seen below) reports this morning, before the game sources close to the player had said that Gimenez was ready and fired up to return to De Kuip and help Milan win, having only left the Rotterdam club 10 days ago.
However, he had to watch his former team-mates celebrate as Igor Paixao was the star of the show, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win that complicates Milan’s mission to get into the last 16 of the Champions League.
The paper writes ‘Gimenez, goosebumps that betray’, implying that the emotions perhaps got the better of the Mexico international. However, compared to his first two appearances against Roma and Empoli, he was much less involved in Milan’s attacking play.
Above all he never had a chance to score, also thanks to the defensive work of his former teammates, including David Hancko who admitted to deploying an approach he knew would frustrate the former Cruz Azul man.
Before the match, Gimenez said: “Feel my heart, my love for football is very strong and I am very happy to be back here.” The lasting memory is the 82nd minute, when he was taken off for Tammy Abraham and the Feyenoord fans gave him a standing ovation, chanting his name,
