Manchester City will have a host of targets in mind to strengthen their squad when the January transfer window opens in less than a week. Several areas of Pep Guardiola’s squad need reinforcing next month. It is expected that the Premier League champions will spend heavily to attempt to get their season back on track. But could they potentially take advantage of the mess that surrounds Barcelona to land a Spanish international? It’s not a far-fetched idea, although it may be an unlikely scenario. The player in question is Dani Olmo and he’d also be an ideal player for City to begin their rebuild around.
Sacha Tavolieri has reported for the Swiss branch of Sky Sports that Manchester City are keeping in regular and close contact with the representatives of Dani Olmo. Due to Barcelona’s current financial situation, they may not be able to register Olmo after December 31st. If they cannot there is a clause in Olmo’s contract that would allow him to leave Barcelona for free if he isn’t registered by that date as per Tavolieri’s report.
There may be a chance that Dani Olmo could be available for free next month. Pol Ballús has written a detailed report for the Athletic that explains the current situation surrounding Dani Olmo. Based on Ballús’ report it isn’t a far-fetched notion that Olmo could become available next month.
What Manchester City have lacked in recent weeks is creativity in the final third. A player like Dani Olmo would immediately add another option in that department for Pep Guardiola. Olmo is also adept at playing as a number 10 so he could in theory play behind Erling Haaland. So, on paper, Dani Olmo would be a tremendous fit in Pep Guardiola’s squad. But is a move for the Spanish international likely? That’s another question entirely.
As Pol Ballús reports for the Athletic any chance of Dani Olmo leaving Barcelona for free next month depends entirely on whether he registered as a Barcelona player or not by December 31st. If he is then there is no chance of him leaving Barcelona next month. But if he isn’t it’s a different situation entirely. Then Olmo’s future will become a topic to monitor next month. But it all hinges on whether or not he is registered as a Barcelona player. That’s the key piece of information that surrounds the whole story.
Dani Olmo as a player is almost the perfect fit for Pep Guardiola’s squad. In hindsight, Manchester City should’ve pursued a move for the Spanish international last summer. But that wasn’t to be. Now if a second chance to move for the Spanish international presenta itself Manchester City should jump at the chance. Only time reveal the answer to that question.
