The council in Rome has voted in favour of approving the plans submitted by AS Roma for a new 60,000-seater stadium, reports on Thursday confirm: “Today is an historic day, not just for the fans, but for all Romans,” said the mayor.

New Roma stadium formally approved by council

Roma are one of several Serie A sides hoping to build a new stadium with the aim of hosting matches at EURO 2032. Milan and Inter are also progressing with their plans for a new ground to replace the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in San Siro.

Towards the end of December, the Giallorossi announced that they had delivered the Technical and Economic Feasibility Study (known as the PFTE in Italy). This was effectively the formal proposal for the new stadium.

As of Friday afternoon, the city council in Rome has voted in favour of approving the plans that Roma submitted just before Christmas.

Roma project for the new stadium in the Pietralata area

There are still several bureaucratic and administrative procedures before work on the new stadium can begin, but as Corriere dello Sport writes, Friday’s vote was a ‘very important step forwards’, and now a new stadium in Pertralata is ‘increasingly less of a dream, and becoming more and more of a reality’.

“Today is an historic day, not just for the fans, but for all Romans,” said mayor Roberto Gualtieri ahead of the vote on Friday (via Corriere dello Sport).

“We can’t wait for the stadium project to be realised. Rome will have a modern stadium integrated into the urban fabric of the city, and will also bring new green spaces to the city.”

Guualtieri also stressed that it is Roma, not the city, who will be providing the vast majority of the funds for the project.

He expressed his thanks to Roma President Dan Friedkin “for the investment that brings a new sporting institution to our city without burdening public finances.”
