The Sky Blues playmaker isn't expected to be sidelined for a lengthy period of time
Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has issued a somewhat reassuring update to supporters regarding Jack Rudoni's eventual return to fitness after suffering a recent injury blow.
The Sky Blues' influential playmaker was ruled out of last weekend's 3-0 victory over local rivals Birmingham City at the CBS Arena, much to the surprise of many supporters, before the ex-Chelsea and England midfielder provided an initial summary of his absence.
City have since won comfortably yet again through a 4-0 rout at the Den vs Millwall on Wednesday night, with the West Midlands side continuing their streak as one of two sides - along with league leaders, Middlesbrough - to remain unbeaten after the first eight Championship encounters, whilst continuing to be the division's top scorers with a tally of 22.
Rudoni's importance to Coventry's form since Lampard replaced Mark Robins last November cannot be understated, with an array of remarkable performances in an advanced midfield role catching the eye of several Premier League sides and other second tier rivals, although he would remain in CV6 following the 7PM transfer deadline on September 1st.
As such, his £5m switch from League One outfit, Huddersfield Town, is looking very much a snip, with many tipping the 24-year-old to fulfil his high potential in the coming years.
Worries regarding City's overall fortunes when his name was omitted from the matchday squad against Blues were understandable as a result. However, the Sky Blues faithful won't have to wait too long until their star performer is back in action, according to Lampard.
Following last Saturday's 3-0 win over Birmingham, Lampard revealed that Rudoni had suffered a blow to his calf in the recent goalless draw against Leicester City in the M69 derby, although the injury would only come to the fore in the lead-up to last weekend's game after his training schedule was limited with another shoulder issue.
At the time, Lampard was unsure as to the full timescale of Rudoni's absence, and whilst that somewhat appears to be the case, the Sky Blues boss was able to provide some form of an update on the recent scans which were taken regarding the playmaker's injury.
“No, not at the minute. He’s not available and won’t be for weeks," Lampard told Coventry Live in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's game with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
“He’s got a calf injury, yeah. It’s not months, but weeks. We’ll have to see," when asked on the extent of the aforementioned scan results.
Lampard is also sweating on the fitness of Josh Eccles - who has recently softened the blow of losing Rudoni - and top scorer Victor Torp, who were both replaced by Jamie Allen and Luke Woolfenden in the second half after suffering respective glute and ankle-related blows.
“Josh had a big problem in his glute which we are managing and hopefully he comes out and trains this morning and then we’ll work out whether he’s ready for the game.
“The same goes with Victor Torp who has got an ankle injury, so we’ll train this morning and see how it works out.
So often, the loss of such an influential player could derail what has been an extremely positive start to the campaign, yet Lampard and his side remain unfazed by Rudoni's injury blow, although their resources could be tested if Eccles and Torp are sidelined ahead of the weekend trip to Hillsborough.
Whilst he remains powerless to their current form at present, Rudoni is expected to bring another slice of excitement to the Coventry party, with recent reports suggesting the 24-year-old is to sign a 'bumper' contract imminently after previously posting 12 goals and 14 assists in just 58 appearances for the club.
Lampard's side have been unrelenting in their aims of bringing Premier League football back to Coventry for the first time since the spring of 2001, with no side scoring more goals, creating as many big chances or keeping more clean sheets than the Sky Blues, who also have the league's top scorer in Haji Wright among their ranks.
With more bleak headlines surrounding their upcoming opponents as Dejphon Chansiri's boardroom saga rumbles on - despite Wednesday being unbeaten in three - Coventry supporters will fancy their chances of making it three-straight wins heading into the international break.
