Coventry City should try and make a move to sign former Arsenal and Brentford midfielder Josh Dasilva on a free transfer.

It has been a strong and yet perhaps frustrating start to the season for an unbeaten Coventry City side that will be aiming to challenge for promotion to the Premier League once again this season.

The Sky Blues, who missed out in the Championship play-off semi-finals to Sunderland last season, will be back for more this year under the management of Frank Lampard.

Lampard’s side have started this season with two victories and three draws which is strong, but there will be irritations over draws to Hull City and Oxford United, as well as requiring a last-gasp equaliser to share the spoils at home to Norwich City.

Tactically, not much really needs to be worked out for Coventry with performances perhaps being even better than their reasonable results have shown, but there could be a couple of concerns.

One of those concerns may be about the depth in their squad, and one man that Coventry could make a surprising swoop for outside of the summer transfer window is former Arsenal and Brentford midfielder Josh Dasilva.

Josh Dasilva could reignite his career at Coventry

After joining Brentford in the summer of 2018, Josh Dasilva went on to establish himself as a key man for the Bees and one of the best midfielders in the Championship for a couple of years.

He was instrumental for them in the 2019/20 season when they lost the play-off final to Fulham, scoring ten goals in 42 games in the Championship from the middle of the park, before then playing a key role in their eventual promotion to the top-flight.

Injuries have majorly plagued his spell in the Premier League, managing to make just 48 appearances across four seasons, including zero appearances last season before the expiration of his contract.

However, when fit, his quality and importance to Brentford still shone through as he made 36 appearances for them during the 2022/23 season when they achieved a club record ninth placed finish.

Since leaving the Bees this summer, he has continued to train with them and there are reports suggesting he wants to earn a new deal at the Gtech Community Stadium, but it would surely now make a lot more sense for 26-year-old to drop a division to ensure regular playing time to reignite his career – and Coventry should pounce on that.

Josh Dasilva would provide depth in midfield for Coventry

It was a quiet summer transfer window for Coventry with the major headlines revolving around key players, such as Milan van Ewijk and Jack Rudoni, remaining at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Their business revolved around strengthening the quality and depth of their defensive positions with goalkeeper Carl Rushworth having joined on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, centre-back Luke Woolfenden signing from Ipswich Town and full-backs Miguel Angel Brau and Kaine Kesler-Hayden joining from Granada and Aston Villa, respectively.

Their attacking output so far this season whereby they are the Championship’s top scorers with 15 goals scored in five matches would suggest the depth and quality at the top end of the pitch is already in a good position.

The starting midfield is also strong, too, with Matt Grimes partnering Victor Torp, in behind Rudoni, but there could be concerns over what happens when one of those starting three get injured following the sale of Ben Sheaf to Wrexham.

Jamie Allen and Josh Eccles have been good servants to Coventry but it wouldn’t be an unreasonable argument to make to say they may be a bit off it in terms of quality to be in a side that want to compete for a top two finish.

Capable of playing in all three positions in that midfield, Dasilva would be a surprising but potentially very smart and shrewd move for Coventry to make to cover for Sheaf and cover for the rest of a strong starting midfield.
