According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Wales will assess Daniel James’ fitness before deciding on his involvement in Tuesday’s friendly against Northern Ireland, with Leeds United and the national team managing him carefully.

He is one of four Leeds players remaining in the Wales squad after Thursday’s World Cup play-off semi-final defeat to Bosnia on penalties. The 28-year-old put his country 1-0 up with a superb long-range strike but did not complete 90 minutes, and Brennan Johnson plus Neco Williams missed in the shootout.

Despite elimination, Wales must fulfil two fixtures in this international window and will host Northern Ireland, the other semi-final losers, on Tuesday night. It is unclear whether Craig Bellamy will go full strength or rotate.

James had started only one game for Leeds since a hamstring tendon injury in November. Bellamy noted the winger had played just once in four months and had been ill on arrival to camp, so staff are being cautious. He said James exceeded expected output against Bosnia but cramped and had to be withdrawn.

Wales are continuing to check on him before settling on his minutes against Northern Ireland. Leeds are likely to welcome the careful approach, and James will hope a further club start in the FA Cup at West Ham this weekend can revive his season.
